On October 17, the 2017 World Design Summit Montreal (China) (WDSM) opened for public at Palais Des Congres

On October 17, the 2017 World Design Summit Montreal (China) (WDSM) opened for public at Palais Des Congres Montreal, Canada. The summit was hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, and undertaken by the Foreign Trade Development Department of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce with assistance from China National Machinery Industry International Co., Ltd. (SINOMACHINT). Attendees to the opening ceremony include Su Zelong, vice consul of the Chinese Consulate General in Montreal; Ren Xiaofei, director of Trade Development Department of the Ministry of Commerce; Jiang Dejun, vice president of SINOMACHINT; Marie-Claude Parenteau-Lebeuf, chair of the WDSM board; Raquel Penalosa, president of International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) in USA; Johnston Strebly, president of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) in Canada; Melanie MacDonald, executive director of the AGI; and Nathalie Dion, president of the Association of Building Contractors of Quebec.

A group of Chinese designers showed up for the first time on behalf of Chinese brands, displaying a wide range of works including architectural, graphic, industrial, interior, landscape design and urban planning. The most representative designers and institutions set up their booths in the Chinese section. Exhibitors brought their unique styles to the fair, including Zhang Zhoujie, pioneer of digitalized design; Zhou Chenchen, a Special Mention award winner at Salone del Mobile Milano; Pan Yanrong, winner of Kan Tai-Keung Design Award; Han Wenbin, an emerging graphic designer; and LYCS Architecture, winner of the 2016 American Architecture Prize.

This summit was aimed at expanding the global professionals’ vision and promoting the communication between decision-makers, industrial representatives, media and the public. In recent years, with the increasing transformation and upgrading of Chinese manufacture industry as well as the rapid development of service sector, a great number of excellent designers and relevant institutions have come into sight. The Chinese exhibition sector in WDSM has not only provided development achievements in domestic design service but also a communication platform between Chinese and overseas designers. It has also strengthened the relations between Chinese design industry and the advanced world-level concepts, which will have a profound influence on the acceleration of the internationalization of Chinese design industry.
